As Portland experiences a surge of economic growth, driven in part by the tech community, there was a need to address increasing economic inequality in a city historically marked by racial exclusion.
In response, Prosper Portland and an alliance of Portland tech companies teamed up to create the Diversity & Inclusion Pledge to increase the diversity of this growing workforce. Combining an equity framework lens with a human-centered design approach, we worked to evaluate the state of the pledge and create pilot projects for the alliance to implement and analyze.
With Design+Culture Lab, the research approach was designed in accordance with our collaborative ethic, taking a whole-systems approach to unearth the perspectives of all stakeholders and co-designing solutions with those most impacted.
We conducted a series of workshops, one-on-one interviews and kaleidoscopes with member companies, community groups, government and other stakeholders to map out the emerging issues and potential solutions.
